How UKTV creates employee engagement

Motivate colleagues properly and watch them flourish.

That’s the message from bosses at UKTV, the television broadcaster that was recently named in the Sunday Times’ Top 100 Best Companies to Work For 2016 list.

The organisation has a stable of 10 TV channels including the likes of Dave and Gold with almost 300 employees.

And it places huge emphasis on inspiring staff to encourage a continual stream of fresh ideas.

Claire Astley, HR director at UKTV, told employeebenefits.co.uk: “We have built a creative, collaborative and, above all, fun working environment that inspires entrepreneurial and innovative thinking, and motivates people to do their best.

“Our unprecedented growth as a business in recent years shows everyone here is doing exactly that.”

So how are employees inspired?

UKTV has been careful to introduce a deliberate mixture of rewards and incentives, aware that people have different motivations.

One of its initiatives is awarding staff chocolate bars containing rewards such as a lie-in, an early finish or duvet day.

Also, a newly introduced initiative sees all employees given an additional day of annual leave on their birthday.

Claire added: “While we have one clear strategy, we offer a range of things that will incentivise everyone.

“People are motivated by different things, so you need to make sure that with a range of motivational benefits there is something for everyone.”

UKTV has created a simple set of values – create, learn, influence, challenge and collaborate – and this approach has paid off.

Recent research shows a whopping 95 per cent of employees believe they can make a valuable contribution to the organisation’s success while 86 per cent are proud to work for UKTV.
